Barney Frank on film

New York filmmaker Bart Everly is in the process of completing Let's Get Frank, a documentary film about openly gay Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank.

According to Boston Globe correspondent Wayne Washington, Everly has spent the past two years filming Frank at work on the floor of the House and at home with his longtime partner, Sergio Pombo. He hopes to get "a clear understanding of how Frank's personal experiences, including his sexual orientation, shape the congressman's political views."

Frank and Everly met at a 1998 fundraising event while the House Judiciary Committee was beginning to deliberate over the possible impeachment of President Clinton. Everly told Washington that Frank suggested he film the proceedings and he agreed. But the focus of the film soon became Frank himself, his coming out, and the 1990 uproar over his relationship with hustler Steve Gobie.

Everly, who teaches photography at the New School in New York City, hopes to complete the film this fall.

Hatch gets voted off this time

Openly gay Survivor winner Richard Hatch will join five of his former cast members on a special celebrity edition of the new NBC show The Weakest Link set to air game May 10.

Hatch is quickly voted off by his former cast-mates, but he may soon reappear to host a syndicated version of The Weakest Link,

Mauresmo was presented with the award but never offered the microphone. As our new president

Foster parents reject gay teen

A gay teen may become a recurring charåcter on the CBS series Judging Amy. Last week, Amy's mom Maxine, a social worker played by Tyne Daly, interviewed a teenage boy whose foster parents wanted to give him up because he had gotten into a fight with one of his foster brothers.

When Maxine interviews the boy, she found out his foster brother had found his male "stroke magazines" and threatened to out him to their foster parents. The gay teen fought his foster brother because he was afraid the parents he had come to love would reject him.

Maxine told the young man that she knew the parents to be good and loving people, and that if she explained the situation to them, they would understand and accept him.

Unfortunately, Maxine was wrong. The foster parents said they could never welcome a gay child in their home. Maxine comforted the devastated youth at the end of the show, and told him she would be proud to take him into her own home.

Eric McCormack 'gets the girl'

"Has playing Will, a gay character, changed the way people perceive you?" People magazine asked Will & Grace star Eric McCormack.

Eric McCormack

"The comments I get from gay men

are all positive. They say thanks for doing it, but also for the way I play it," he replied.

McCormack's latest role is bandleader Harold Hill in the Broadway revival of The Music Man.

"Despite the fact that The Music Man is a splashy musical, I still haven't been typecast," McCormack said. “After all, Harold Hill is a straight leading man who gets the girl."

Hawkins will survive

Bisexual rocker Sophie B. Hawkins talked to Us Weekly about her decision to break with Columbia and buy back the master tapes of her recently released album Timbre.

Hawkins, who formed her own company, Trumpet Swan Records, said she was dissatisfied with the way Columbia was handling the record.

"We no longer saw eye to eye," she said. "You have to go for it even though you may lose all your friends and money."

Hawkins is set to re-release the album with a bonus CD of home demos and remixes through Rykodisc Records.

"I was ready to end up on the street, but I'm a survivor," she said. "I'm not afraid to roll up my sleeves and get dirty. I've been a house cleaner, a waitress, a drummer, a coat checker."

Hawkins' life story will be told in the documentary The Cream Will Rise, set to air on the Sundance channel this month. 'If Anne can do it, so can l'

"If Anne Heche could play a lesbian, then so can I," quipped Joan Collins at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Awards.

Collins presented the Outstanding Television Movie award to HBO for If These Walls Could Talk II at the awards, held April 16 in New York City.

She said she wants to play a gay role, adding, "Please let me have a turn, because I think I have done my bit for heterosexuality."

Miss Universe bans TG women

USA Today reports officials of the Miss Universe pageant are dismissing tabloid and internet rumors that Miss France, Elodie Gossuin, is transgendered.

While they dismiss the rumors, Miss Universe officials are adding a new rule next year that all contestants must be "natural born women."

'Xena' to air final show

Finally, Xena, Warrior Princess began its final run last week with an episode that played profusely with the lesbian subtext of the show.

A group of Xena fans in present-day New York City clones the warrior princess and her beloved Gabrielle to fight evil in the modern world. The fans, four women and a man, bicker over which Xena episodes to implant in the clones to stimulate their genetically-stored memories.

One of the fans, played by the actress who played the ancient Xena fan Mean in past episodes, seemed to be caught up romantically in the lesbian subtext of the show. She insists they implant all the scenes from past episodes that depicted the deep love between Xena and Gabrielle.

Sadly, the final episode of Xena, Warrior Princess will air sometime next month.
